Finally, useful Woodworking Design Software

5.0 4 years ago

Comments: The learning curve is low and made easier by available videos that walked me through the basic concepts and initial steps needed to get going. Interactive ZOOM sessions with one of the company principals demonstrate the various functions of Sketchlist 3D. In them he responds to questions by working through an issue in an active instance of Sketchlist 3D. To me this is a real gift allowing me to see how its done 1st hand asking questions along the way. The good sessions are made available online for future reference. After I was up and running, it allowed me to focus on the design of my project not struggle with the complexity of the software. Starting with the 3D area of of the project, adding boards, positioning, sizing and shaping them as I would with real wood. It gives me a 3D virtual image of what was envisioned inside my head. Seeing how things fit, allowing me to identify the potential problems in construction and tool positioning. Most importantly allowing me to make the changes and adjustments to the project in the software instead of the shop. It allows me to virtually build in software what's been rolling around inside my head. Making the woodworking part much more productive. I think this is a great produce. Looking forward to the next version.

Pros:

This is not a complex CAD package. It is reasonable priced cabinet, furniture woodworking design program driven by woodworkers. Projects are developed board by board. Pretty much the way you are going to build them. The Initial learning curve is low. The mirroring function eliminated work to produce duplicate components such as cabinets, drawers, doors... Resizing in the X and Y direction is simple. Optimizing function tells me what materials are needed Shop Drawing function can produce 2D diagrams of individual pieces or the whole project. Exports to DXF file for CAD packages and CNC software. Produces 3D Pdf files for wife, friend or customer approval. Sketchlist 3D is a work in progress that is far enough along to be extremely useful and easy to use. Once basic concepts are understood, you only need to know how to work with wood.

Cons:

Needs better setups facilities allowing users to define options such as text size... It could be more consistent across different functions user interface screens. Optimizer could better deal with odd size stock or scrap. Not everything needs to come in full sheets

Good for begginers

Pros:

Ease of deployment and multiple feautures

Cons:

Compared to Revit Architecture, there are lesser features and rendering is less detailed.

Thank you for this review. I think your assessment is correct. SkecthList 3D is more specific to woodworking and as a result, has less detail ability than a CAD program. But as you point out CAD is more diffuclt to learn and use.

Sketchlist from the Hobbyist point of view

5.0 4 years ago

Comments: It's been great. I've used it for everything from simple tables and cabinets to entire rooms (I built a library and a kitchen with it).

Pros:

I use Sketchlist as a way of getting my designs out of my head and on to paper/screen. Once I've worked out the design, of course, it then serves as a guide of how to build whatever I'm building. The cutsheets alone are worth the price of admission, but working in 3D and being able to show others a 3D example of what I'm doing (and therefore getting wifely approval) is also highly valued.

Cons:

This software has a bit of a learning curve. I'm a computer professional and have a leg-up on most users as a result, but I can imagine that for someone unfamiliar with computers this may be difficult to learn. That said, however, [SENSITIVE CONTENT HIDDEN] has put a lot of effort into education - videos, documentation and the like - and he's always available to answer a question. Like anything else,

Overall, Very Happy

5.0 4 years ago

Comments: For me, coming from no experience using CAD software, there was a learning curve. But this is the case with any software that is powerful. Once I got a feel for the order to do things, then it was much easier for me. It is very important to learn how to use the Optimize Tool and to set up your stock so the the cut list will give you accurate information. "Optimize early and often" is critical to being able to use this software successfully. There are a lot of videos on the company's website that are extremely helpful.

Pros:

My favorite feature of SketchList 3D is the cut list and the ability to know the amount of stock necessary for a build. I'm a newbie to woodworking and this feature is a huge help. Once you get past the learning curve, it is really fun to use.

Cons:

At times, I would find features that I thought should be in the program, but this was due to my lack of experience with the program. The features are there when you learn to use them. Only criticism I have is that the full featured program is a bit pricey for the weekend warrior - I took advantage of an upgrade special and got the professional version. It would be a nice feature to be able to purchase component upgrades, such as the ability to do a cut list, without paying for features that you do not need.

saved me more money than the cost of the software

5.0 4 years ago

Comments: My only regret is not having bought this software sooner in my woodworking career and if any advice I'd pass along would be to buy the pro version instead of the hobby version...the optimizer will save you the difference in cost in savings not only on wood but time with the cutting diagrams. I am also using this software to export my designs to my Shaper Origin so I'm not spending any additional time learning another design software. Great software and excellent support.

Pros:

This software allowed me to easily design cabinets for my garage shop and then optimize the cutting diagram so I not only knew how much wood I needed for my project but how to cut out the pieces to minimize the waste.

Cons:

Most of the challenges were more user error than a limitation of the software i.e., not being aware of all the aspects or capabilities of the software when designing cabinets. The help and forums were amazing and with videos to guide me through my user errors I became more efficient at designing.

Home user of pro version

4.0 4 years ago

Comments: The greatest benefits are being able to determine how much material is needed for a project before the first cut is made (Optimizer) and the second is being able to clearly see what the end product will look like in three d.

Pros:

Easy to use as designed for wood workers. Layout and design of a project is done in a logical way. The optimizer shows perfectly cuts, wood used and minimizes wastage.

Cons:

Does not mirror upwards. Mirroring to the left is wonderful. It would be great if you could mirror bottom to top.

SketchList as a support software to streamline the manufacture and sale of a product

4.0 4 years ago

Comments: SketchList is a very good tool to streamline many processes that are related to the Design, Manufacture and Costing of products made of wood and some other materials used in the field of construction.

Pros:

* It is a very intuitive and easy to use, as well as versatile to obtain cut lists, templates and approximate costing of an entire project. * Rendering is very easy and illustrative for presenting designs to customers. * I have not used it in CNC together with CAD-CAM yet, but I think the DXF files that can be generated in SketchList are very useful for it

Cons:

* Sometimes I have had difficulties opening the file of a finished project that I have already exported previously. * Some tools, such as Rotating objects or subassemblies, are somewhat complicated, and you have to invest a little more time.

Gustavo, thanks for writing a review. We made these improvements in the newly released SketchList 3D Version 5. We are excited for you to check out the streamlined process of rotating and subassemblies.

Pros:

I like It produces cultists and shopping lists.

Cons:

It’s taking me a while to learn all the shortcuts and how to’s. Haven’t figured out how to get a shopping list which is one of my main reasons for purchase. I need to watch more of their videos provided to learn all the how’s. It’s just finding the time.
